What Our Client’s Dream Yard Looks Like 3 Years Later

This week, we’re sharing a yard that was built out over 3 years ago, but it still looks as incredible as it did the first time we visited the finished space.

BEFORE

Our client had a massive lot that was a completely blank slate. They had a budget of $300-$400K and wanted a space that had luxurious details but that would be low maintenance for them long-term. 

AFTER

We created a modern, minimalist design and utilized high-quality materials that hold up well and require little upkeep to look as incredible as they did when they were first installed.

BALANCED PROPORTIONS

This yard is absolutely massive, so we made sure we kept the correct proportions for the space to feel balanced. We have a huge pool, with an equally large turf area, and patio.

GET THE LUXE LOOK WITH TURF

Turf is a low-maintenance alternative to having a grass lawn. And—adding furniture on top of turf is one of our favorite ways to get that ultra-luxurious, private resort look.

KID-FRIENDLY, FUN DETAILS

A lot of the time, when we add a pool this large to a space, it’s all about swimming. But, we also made sure this pool can work for kids, and created a massive baja shelf where the little ones can splash around.

UTILIZING OTHERWISE-WASTED SPACE

In this yard, we ended up with space behind the pool that we turned into a hidden put-out zone. This space otherwise would have been wasted, but now it’s one of our favorite parts of the entire yard.

SWINGS AS SEATING

Instead of using ‘traditional’ outdoor furniture, we added swings to this space. Not only are they insanely comfortable, but they also add a playful, and unexpected element to the yard, which is why we added them to this space. 

When it comes to luxury backyard design you can have a space that’s both full of incredible features and maintenance-free.

A Tranquil Backyard Oasis With Some ‘Wow Factor’ Hidden Features

Wait until you see how we took this outdoor space from an empty dirt lot to a tranquil oasis with some unbelievable hidden features.

Our client has a family of 7 and just built a new home. They wanted a luxury exterior for their family home and came to us with some impressive requests.

  • A Sunken seating area INSIDE the pool.

🤔 The Challenge
This is a tract home that does not have a huge lot.

✨ The Design
Our final design is seriously serene with hidden playful elements. We took advantage of our client’s stunning view and their existing space to give them everything they wanted and more for their dream yard.

Our client wanted their space to be minimal and modern, with elements that remind them of traveling in Tuscany.

But, they also wanted their 5 children to be able to enjoy the backyard and have fun in the outdoor space.

Standout Features That Brought This Yard To Life:

Rope Swing And Water Curtain

Our client has 5 kids so we knew we needed to add something fun that they would love. So, we designed a rope swing that makes hopping into the pool epic. But, it’s even more exciting because we installed it along with a water curtain to take this swing to the next level.

Indoor/Outdoor Spa 

This home has a huge California room, so we took full advantage of the indoor/outdoor living space by adding the spa here. The result is a cozy, seriously serene space our client can use to unwind.

Floating Seating Area

This might be our favorite seating area and fire table to date…because it’s in the middle of the pool. We got to take advantage of our client’s stunning view by placing the main seating area in the center of the outdoor space, looking out onto a stunning view.

Our 3 Favorite Hidden Features:

Floating Steps

We’ve created ‘floating’ walkways before, but not like this one. We were able to create floating walkways across this entire outdoor space and you can actually swim underneath each step—so you can swim seamless laps around the entire pool.

Underwater Stools

Along the edge of the pool, we added some hidden, underwater stools. Our client and the family can swim up to the stools and sip smoothies poolside whenever they want.

Zero Edge Pool And Spa

We created an entire underground chamber to make the zero-edge pool and spa possible. The water looks like it’s just disappearing, but it’s actually getting funneled through a whole system that’s hidden under turf.

Safety Without Sacrificing Style: How We Transformed This Yard Into A Family-Friendly Oasis

When it comes to creating a backyard oasis, this design is proof that you do not need to sacrifice incredible design or leave out luxe details to end up with a yard that’s family-friendly and focused on safety.

Our clients came to us looking for a backyard they could enjoy with the entire family—and safety is their biggest priority.

They have young children and they wanted to make sure that before anything else, any design we came up with would work for their family’s needs.

We knew that meant adding a standard rectangle pool so we could use an automated pool cover to keep their kids safe.

And while we didn’t design a custom pool for this space, it’s the rest of the design that adds the ‘wow factor’ our clients were also looking for and that makes it a backyard that makes them feel like they’re on vacation every time they go outside.

LAYER UP

This yard is all about layers and we elevated the entire space by giving it dimension with layers.

We even incorporated this concept into the driveway, with layers of tile, as well as throughout the backyard.

This is a great way to add interest and that ‘wow factor’ when you are working with a pretty standard lot. It takes the yard from feeling a little bit cramped and not all that interesting—to a 5-star feel.

ORGANIC ELEMENTS ADD A SENSE OF ‘ZEN’

Our clients really wanted to feel like they could escape and get away from it all in their backyard.

They love the look and feel of super organic elements, which is why we added a ton of wood to the design.

And, incorporating a statement tree just amplifies this idea even more, giving the whole space that feeling of serenity and calm that our clients wanted from their exterior.

BLENDING INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LIVING

We wanted to create a unique space for our clients that blends indoor and outdoor living.

The view from inside their home looks out onto this incredible backyard and actually makes you feel like you’re immersed in the exterior space when you’re still inside.

This is one of our favorite parts about this entire design because it just extends the outdoor living area into the house and the rich materials and subtle color tones give the entire space the organic modern look we were going for.

A Look At Our Most Exciting Designs 

An Unforgettable Swing

Hanging chairs and lounge areas are gorgeous in any yard. But, we added a playful twist to this idea for our client’s yard.

And, with a budget of $1M+ for the space, we were able to get really creative!

Instead of going with your typical lounge area, we added a swing right over the pool, so you feel like you’re floating over the water every time you sit down.

We couldn’t believe how cool this feature was when we finally saw it in real life, so it’s no surprise that our clients absolutely love lounging here.

A Hidden Putting Green

There’s no need to head out for weekend entertainment when you have a putting green out back.

And, this yard is especially unique because at first glance, the focus is on the pool and lounge area.

The space is minimal and modern in design…but there’s a hidden secret.

Behind the pool, in space that would have just been unused, we added a putting green.

It’s out of sight, so our client still has a super relaxing private resort to enjoy.

But, when they feel like having a little fun, they can tee off.

Fire On Water?

A fire pit is a must-have staple for any backyard—especially if you love to host friends and family for s’more night. But, in this yard, we took ‘fire pit’ to the extreme and designed a floating fire area.

You get to cozy up in a floating sunken seating area, enjoy a gorgeous view, AND warm up fireside.

But, what takes this yard to the next level, are the boardwalks that lead you across the pool and make you feel like you just stepped off the plan in the Maldives and are about to check into your private cabana for the night.

…except you didn’t have to brave a many-hour flight to enjoy a 5-star resort on the water.

Pickleball Anyone?

Whether you’re competitive by nature or want to enjoy a leisurely kid-friendly game, pickleball is the way to go.

It’s one of our favorite sports because it’s genuinely so much fun to play, but also because it’s perfect for the whole family, grandparents included!

That’s why we get extra excited when a client wants to add a pickleball to their yard.

And, while we’ve had a number of clients request a pickleball court this year, one client had us add the court to their ROOF of the house, which was definitely a first.

Imagine how incredible it would be to play a game of doubles with your favorite people while enjoying your yard’s stunning views instead of heading to the park and hoping a court is free.

This is one feature we’re going to keep adding to yards whenever possible.

A Floating Entertainment Zone

What if you could watch the game, from the middle of your pool?

We created a seriously insane entertainment zone in this client’s yard.

We designed a floating, sunken seating area and then added a retractable TV to the space so they don’t even have to leave the pool to check the score or host movie night.

This is one of the coolest features we’ve added to a sunken seating area and we’d definitely be hosting the BEST BBQs if this was our yard. How about you?

A Private Island Waterslide 

You’d never have to go on vacation again…

…if you had a private island waterpark in your backyard.

And that’s exactly what we designed for our clients.

We completely transformed their space and made it feel like they have their own island getaway—complete with big boulders and a waterfall.


The entire space is made even more magical thanks to the waterslide and waterfall that make it family-friendly and seriously fun.

For this client’s design, we made a massive lazy river area, complete with an island, bridge, and bumper boats.

This is the first time we’ve ever incorporated BUMPER boats into a design & now we’re wondering why we don’t always add them!

We wanted to create a space for our clients with everything they need for a family-fun weekend away. But we made it so they don’t have to get on a plane to have an insanely fun vacation.

We can’t wait to see this space once construction is complete so we can test out those bumper boats!

How We Transformed This Small Space

We faced some major challenges designing this small space—because we were working within the confines of the tiny rooftop. But, that didn’t mean we had to leave out any of the luxury features that completely transformed this outdoor space into a gorgeous place our clients could enjoy.

These are some of the things we considered when creating Tarek and Heather’s tranquil rooftop escape and a look at the details that brought the entire thing to life.

CUSTOMIZE STANDARD FEATURES FOR AN ELEVATED LOOK ON A BUDGET

We took a standard spa and gave it a complete makeover by adding Dekton to make it unique and give the illusion that it cost much more than it actually did. Utilizing custom finishes on standard selections is a cost-effective way to get the upscale look you want for your yard without going over budget.

CREATE SEPARATE SPACES AND PLAY WITH LEVELS

To instantly make any space feel larger than it is, we like to create zones. On this rooftop, we made a cozy seating area that feels like it’s in another world, and a spa area that’s seriously cozy and separate from the rest of the space. Playing with levels and separating spaces is a great way to add interest to a tiny yard and to make things seem larger than they are.

LIGHTING CAN COMPLETELY TRANSFORM A SPACE

Custom lighting makes this space incredible to enjoy during the day, but even more magical after dark. There’s a stand-out tree that adds a natural element to the design and moody color-changing features that add modern flair. Lighting can make a major impact on the overall look and feel of a space, and that’s definitely the case with this yard.

MATERIAL SELECTION MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Choosing the right materials for a design is always essential, but when we’re working with a small space, it’s even more important. For this rooftop, we mixed classic stones with warm wood tones, moody lighting, and a blend of textures to bring everything to life.

KEEP MAINTENANCE IN MIND

We always want our clients to have a yard that stands up to the elements and that will look just as incredible in 2 years, 5 years, or even 10 years as it did when it was first constructed. One way we do this is by selecting materials that are not only durable, but that require little to no maintenance. For this rooftop, we went with turf and instead of using wood, we chose porcelain tiles that look like wood because they’re much easier to maintain over time.

RAIN CURTAIN WATERFALL

Nothing makes a statement quite like a rain curtain and, in our client’s extra-small outdoor space, that’s especially true. This focal feature adds movement and excitement to the yard and we added custom lighting to give it an extra ‘wow factor.’

THE DREAMY SPA

This spa sits right in the center of the yard and it’s so dreamy and oversized that you don’t even feel like you’re missing out on having a pool. It’s the perfect place for our client’s to unwind and fits in seamlessly thanks to the zero-edge design.

If you want to incorporate ‘water’ in your yard, but your budget is limited, skip the spa or pool and choose a focal water feature instead.
