SMALL SPACE SUNKEN SEATING AREAS

Adding a sunken seating area to a small yard helps give the illusion of extra space by adding depth and dimension. Here are some small spaces that feel much larger thanks to the seating areas we designed

FLOATING SUNKEN SEATING AREAS

This is one wow-factor design feature we love creating for our clients because it instantly makes any outdoor space feel like a luxury private resort. These are two of our favorite floating, sunken seating areas.

LARGE-SCALE SUNKEN SEATING AREAS

These massive seating spaces make a major statement and have tons of space to seat everyone! Plus, both of these designs have a waterwall, one of our favorite water features to add to any yard because it amplifies the ambiance.

SUNKEN SPA AREA

This doesn’t technically count as a sunken seating area, but we also love creating cozy spa spaces like these that are sunken below the level of the pool. It makes for an even more enjoyable space to soak.

FIRE TABLE SUNKEN SEATING AREAS

There’s nothing cozier than curling up by the fire in a sunken seating area. It creates separation from the rest of the yard and these are two of our favorite examples—featuring some impressive fire tables!

CUSTOM LIT SUNKEN SEATING AREAS

A CHECKLIST TO INSPIRE YOUR BACKYARD TRANSFORMATION

You don’t need a pool to create the backyard of your dreams, but adding water to your outdoor space is a great way to add a ‘wow factor’ and create a focal point for your entire yard. If you don’t have the space or budget for a pool, you can still achieve that high-end resort feeling by adding a water feature or a spa to your yard.

Double the amount of usable time you have to enjoy your outdoor space, by prioritizing some sort of fire in your yard. This might mean adding a fire pit and sunken seating area, or a fire wall as an accent. However, you choose to light up your yard with fire, know that it gives a cozy glow to your outdoor area and gives you the ability to enjoy being outdoors after dark.

We love designing spaces for our clients that transition from indoors to outdoors and adding a California room, or outdoor lounge room is one way to seamlessly do this. Plus, it acts as a space to transport you and bring the resort home—so you feel like you’re on vacation every time you step outside.

Whether you’re having a picnic with the kids or hosting an elegant dinner party, creating an epic outdoor dining space will take your yard from boring to breathtaking. Sprinkle in some twinkling lights, comfy chairs, a stunning table, and you have space to make memories with the people you love al fresco.

This might seem like a small detail to include in this list, but nothing instantly elevates a yard and gives it that resort vibe more than putting furniture on top of turf. Not only is this material super durable and low maintenance, but it’s got that high-end look you’d find at a resort and that can make your outdoor living space feel like a private resort.

Even if your neighbor’s patio is feet away, you can achieve a sense of privacy with the right design! Why Lighting Matters

Lighting might seem like an afterthought when it comes to creating a luxury exterior design when you are including features like an infinity edge spa, custom pool, or sunken seating area. But, lighting is the single most effective way to take your yard to the next level.

LIGHTING GIVES YOU MORE OUTDOOR TIME
Its ability to transform a space and set the mood for your backyard resort is unmatched. Plus, a lighting design allows you to enjoy your yard after dark, not just during the day. Lighting extends the amount of time you can spend in your outdoor space, which is why lighting is key to any exterior transformation.

LIGHTING SETS THE MOOD
Want drama? A cozy corner in your outdoor space? A bold, modern entertainment zone?

The best way to set the tone for your space is by considering the lighting.

It can change the mood in your space and add drama in a way that’s just not possible with daylight. Whether it’s with fire elements, colorful accents, or soft and cozy glow, you can instantly change up the vibe in your entire yard with lighting.

LIGHTING DEFINES YOUR SPACE
We love to use LED light strips to define spaces and accent architectural features in a yard. Lighting can help create the illusion of additional space when used underneath floating elements in a small yard. It can also be used to draw your eye to the most exciting features in your yard.

Our Favorite Lighting Designs

Here’s a look at some of our favorite lighting designs, lighting elements, and private resorts that pop thanks to their lighting.

We don’t know which part of this lighting design is most impressive…because the entire space is one of our favorites after dark.

The colorful, custom fountain is an absolute standout in this space and is giving serious Caesar’s Palace vibes.

But, equally as impressive, is the candle wall that looks and feels like real candles but is actually made using LED candles that are remote-controlled. It transforms the space from tiny backyard to a Roman bath-inspired spa.

This sprawling backyard beach is minimal in design, but the sheer size of the outdoor space is breathtaking.

At first glance, the pool is impressive, but after dark it really comes to life thanks to the lighting we used to highlight the different levels in the space.

Plus, the entire yard is accented by one of the largest fire features we’ve ever designed. These two lighting elements combine to make this exterior absolutely unforgettable at night.

This $1 million yard takes lighting to a whole new level.

Not only is there an incredible opportunity to create whatever mood you’re looking for in the space by changing the LED light colors, but we used lighting in an artistic way that’s seriously unique to this space.

We had a custom LED light art panel created for our client’s wall and it is one of the most incredible ways we’ve ever used lighting in an outdoor space to date.

This dreamy backyard spa is even more relaxing at night than it is during the day thanks to the soft glow of ambient lighting we incorporated into the design.

It makes for a serene retreat and the perfect place to cozy up and unwind after a long week.

This Bali-inspired yard is as incredible after dark as it is during the day thanks to lighting.

The sunken fire pit and seating area is one of the standout elements that makes this yard so unforgettable, but the space has tons of drama thanks to the LED strip lighting we utilized to accentuate the levels in this yard.

We also added twinkling bistro lights to the patio cover to add a cozy mood to the seating area at night and accent lighting throughout the entire yard that makes it a space you want to spend all your time in—whether it’s day or night.

We just might like this Santorini-inspired private resort better after dark than we do during the day.

We made sure to add LED strips to highlight all the important architectural elements in the yard, but there are two stand-out lighting moments we can’t get over.

First, are the hanging globes we added to this gorgeous olive tree. They reflect off the water to create this fairy-tale magic that makes the space so incredibly inviting.

And, second, is the candle wall we created in the hidden spa. It gives Roman bathhouse vibes and makes for a seriously serene spa experience.

→ To have the go-to Airbnb in Indio, CA—which is just walking distance from the famed Coachella music festival

→  To be fully booked out all year ‘round, not just in April when the festival is held

→  To have an absolutely insane space that has more activities and fun packed in the backyard than we’ve ever designed before

→  A true private resort feeling and that ‘wow factor’ you won’t find anywhere else

…and everything you’d want for a seriously unforgettable weekend vacation.

Here’s a closer look at some of the outstanding features that make this space the most impressive Airbnb in Indio, CA 👇👇

The Lazy River: There’s nothing ‘lazy’ about this lazy river. It is powered by four (yes, four!) powerful pumps and takes you on a winding ride around the entire property.

The Waterfall: This impressive water feature is made with some stunning stonework, and we designed this space with adventure in mind because you can use the waterfall as a jumping rock.

Beach Entry: Nothing says ‘private resort’ like a private beach, which is why we added a lounge area with a beach entry to the pool.

The Grotto Spa: This incredible cenote grotto spa is seriously serene and a breathtaking place to unwind in this private resort…but it’s elevated even more thanks to the hidden fire features we added behind the waterfalls.

Two Private Islands: In this sprawling space, we added not one, but two private islands that you can access thanks to floating stone pathways and some impressive bridges. On the islands, we created some special spaces, including a fire pit area, and hanging chairs.

Dueling Waterslides: A waterslide instantly makes any backyard resort more entertaining, but two is even better. We created dueling waterslides perfect for racing and endless fun!

Sports Courts: Whether you’re super into pickleball, want to take a turn at bocce ball, shoot some hoops, or host a competitive game of cornhole, there are tons of lawn games and sports courts in this Airbnb.

This week, we’re sharing a design that transformed our client’s standard grass backyard into a tropical paradise—complete with a private island and waterslide! 🏝

This lot is on a huge hill with a massive slope, which made it difficult to design the sprawling pool and island we wanted to add to the yard.

This standard grass backyard was not what our clients wanted out of an outdoor space. They wanted to be able to enjoy spending time in their yard, hosing, and

When we revealed the design, our clients couldn’t have been more excited to see it brought to life. Taking them on a 3D tour of the space is the best way to give them an accurate idea of what they can expect once construction is complete.

The finished yard definitely has that ‘wow factor’ our clients were hoping for. It’s the ultimate backyard paradise—perfect to create those beach vacation vibes every time our clients step outside.

The stand-out feature in this outdoor space is the private tropical island we added to the pool. It instantly makes the yard feel like a high-end private resort.

This spa is elevated above the rest of the yard, so our clients can really take advantage of their home’s stunning view when they’re relaxing in their colorfully tiled spa.

These dramatic fire bowls are part fire feature part fountain and add drama to the yard—day and night. Plus, they help define the space in such a large yard.

This covered seating area is perfect for entertaining the whole family, enjoying a meal alfresco, or watching the game thanks to the fold-down big screen TV hiding in this space.
