How We Turned An Small, Unusable Yard Into A Luxe Backyard Oasis

BEFORE

Our client’s dirt lot and tiny yard were unusable. They wanted a modern design and an outdoor space they could actually enjoy.

AFTER

With a budget of $300K, we turned the small yard into a luxurious retreat where they can relax, host, and have fun.  Keep reading for a look at some of the stand-out features that make this yard so impressive. 

SUNKEN SEATING AREA

To make any space look and feel larger than it is, playing with levels is key. We created depth and dimension for our client’s tiny yard with this sunken seating area. It’s cozy and separate from the rest of the space, and it features some impressive materials that give it an ultra-luxurious finish.

RAIN CURTAIN WATERFALL

Nothing makes a statement quite like a rain curtain and, in our client’s extra-small outdoor space, that’s especially true. This focal feature adds movement and excitement to the yard and we added custom lighting to give it an extra ‘wow factor.’

THE DREAMY SPA

This spa sits right in the center of the yard and it’s so dreamy and oversized that you don’t even feel like you’re missing out on having a pool. It’s the perfect place for our client’s to unwind and fits in seamlessly thanks to the zero-edge design.

A HIDDEN PUTTING GREEN

No yard is too small for fun and entertainment. Our clients still wanted to be able to enjoy their yard and host friends and family, which is why we added a golf zone to the small space.

What’s Possible For Your Yard: Luxury Exterior Design From $300K To $1M+

$300K-$400K RESORTS

You don’t need an unlimited budget to end up with your dream yard and an outdoor space you never want to leave. If your budget is between $300K-$400K, there are countless ways you can save and end up with all the features you want to include in your design. Here are some budget-saving ideas to consider:

 

OPT FOR A WATER FEATURE
If you want to incorporate ‘water’ in your yard, but your budget is limited, skip the spa or pool and choose a focal water feature instead. This could be a fountain, a water wall, or some other water feature that gives your space the movement and texture you’re looking for without taking up most of your budget.

 

SKIP THE SUNKEN SEATING AREA
A sunken seating area looks incredible in any outdoor space, but it’s also expensive to execute. Instead of investing a huge hunk of your budget into this one element, work with your designer to achieve the ‘look’ in a more cost-effective way. Play with color and material choice to create the illusion of separate spaces and a cozy area that achieves the same purpose.

 

TILE INSTEAD OF SLAB
One way we love to advise our clients to save their budget is by selecting tile for their finishes instead of slab. Whether it’s for your outdoor kitchen, dining area, or fire feature, using tile achieves a super similar look for a fraction of the cost.

With a budget between $400K-$500K, we get to explore some custom features and stretch our creativity to give our clients a truly high-end yard without a huge budget. Here are some ideas to help you get the most out of your final design when you’re working within this price range:

 

ADD FINISHING TOUCHES TO STANDARD FEATURES
Instead of splurging on big-budget custom features, start with standard fixtures and add custom finishing details instead. This is one thing we recommend to our clients when they really want a custom look, but don’t have an unlimited budget.

 

SKIP THE INFINITY EDGE
An infinity or zero-edge pool is one of our most popular requests from clients, and it can instantly take a yard from standard to unforgettable. But, if you’re trying to make the most of your budget, this is a high-priced feature you might want to reconsider. Or, opt for a zero-edge spa instead of a full pool.

 

PLAY WITH LEVELS
One way to instantly elevate the look of any outdoor space is by adding dimension and levels to the design. This is one thing we always recommend for our clients because it’s a cost-effective way to make a yard look seriously luxurious and is a detail that makes a yard feel more like a private resort than your typical backyard.

7 of Our All-Time Favorite Exterior Designs

This minimal design makes a major impact thanks to the massive scale we used when designing this space. We designed a 30 ft. fire wall, one of the biggest pools we’ve ever added to a yard, a standout spa, and a huge palm tree that instantly makes you feel like you’re lounging on a private island when you’re enjoying this yard.

This breathtaking design has it all. We really used the existing space and stunning view to create a 5-star experience that’s balanced and that is full of ‘wow factor’ features. We even utilized design details from the home’s architecture to make sure that the backyard resort is a seamless continuation of our client’s dream home.

This dreamy, organic modern design is the ultimate place to escape into and unwind. There’s a hidden spa, a neutral, soothing color palette, and a ton of depth and texture—which make the entire outdoor space unbelievably relaxing.

Our client wanted to create a private resort for all their friends and family to enjoy. We took the existing beachside lot with an incredible view and turned it into a true paradise—complete with custom lighting, floating daybeds, and endless places to lay back and relax.

With a $1M+ budget, we were able to add some unforgettable features to this yard and make the small lot feel much larger than it is. We played with planes, adding platforms and sunken areas, plus a ton of custom lighting that make the entire yard as impressive after dark as it is during the day.

Our client wanted to ensure that their design was family-friendly, but didn’t want to sacrifice on style. The design we came up with is both elegant and safe for the kids to enjoy. We incorporated a standard pool so we could add an automatic pool cover, ample dining and seating areas, and a stunning transition from indoors to the backyard.

This compact design proves that no yard is too small for a luxury makeover. Not only were we able to add a seating area and an incredible fire table to the tiny space, but we created a gorgeous spa, custom water wall, AND a putting green to make the entire space feel like a fun-filled private resort.

BONUS PICK

Because we had such a tough time narrowing it down to just 7 favorite designs, we want to share a bonus pick. This is one of our latest creations and our 13-year-old-selves would be giddy at the thought of spending weekends in this backyard. We added bumper boats, a place to kayak, a private island, and so much more to this insane yard.
